In freight railway transport, handbrake indicators are primarily associated with wagons equipped with disc brakes. However, wagons using the classical brake block system often lack this valuable element, resulting in frequent damage to the wheelset’s running surface due to inadvertent driving with an activated handbrake. This is mainly attributed to operator inattention during wagon shunting or before train departure.

At the Fleet Management’s request, we developed and patented simple handbrake indicator to alert shunting staff and to help effectively reduce this risk. The purpose-customized materials for production and contemporary manufacturing technologies, including 3D printing, ensure that this indicator is virtually maintenance-free. Furthermore, its cost-effectiveness, especially when compared to the expenses associated with resolving flat spots, establishes this device as an effective tool for enhancing railway transport safety.

The indicator assembly was evaluated under EU Regulation 402/2013, which identified the change as significant but with an acceptable risk. This assessment was also confirmed by the Rail Authority in the Safety Assessment Report, available in the download section.

To further minimize potential risks, the indicator can be equipped with a digital sensor of handbrake’s released position, allowing integration with telematics.
